Read the sermon text: Romans 2:1-11
Read the sermon summary: In contrast to last week, this passage is about the future judgment of God to be revealed. In this passage, Paul "catches" his Jewish readers in his trap. Perhaps he suspects they were filled with pride when they read about God's present judgment on Gentiles for their sin. Paul's aim is to show that "every human who does evil" will experience tribulation and distress (v. 9). Therefore, no one has any excuse to condemn another person. It is those who "by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality" who will receive eternal life. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What reasons does Paul give for why it is wrong to pass judgment on others? How do we make sense of Paul’s statements in verses 7-8 regarding judgment and salvation… how do these statements harmonize with the emphasis of justification by faith alone?
