Read the sermon text: John 18:33-38

Read the sermon summary: What is your purpose? Why were you born? As we continue our series leading up to Christmas, we’re asking the question, “Why did Jesus come?” In our passage for this Sunday we see one instance in which Jesus answered this question himself. This is why he was born. This is why he came into the world. To bear witness to the truth. We’re moved to reflect on this simple yet profound statement. Considering the existence of the Son prior to his birth, what does it mean that this is why he was born? To what truth does Jesus bear witness? What does this mean for humanity? What does this mean for disciples of Jesus?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

O Come All Ye Faithful (Adeste Fideles)

O come all ye faithful
Joyful and triumphant
O come ye O come ye to Bethlehem
Come and behold Him
Born the King of angels

Chorus

O come let us adore Him
O come let us adore Him
O come let us adore Him
Christ the Lord

Sing choirs of angels
Sing in exultation
O sing all ye bright
Hosts of heav'n above
Glory to God all
Glory in the highest

Yea Lord we greet Thee
Born this happy morning
Jesus to Thee be all glory giv'n
Word of the Father
Now in flesh appearing
