Read the sermon text: Hebrews 10:26-39
Read the sermon summary: Who have you stirred up this past week? In our passage from last Sunday, we saw the encouragement to consider how to stir up each other towards love and good deeds. In our passage for this week, we see the importance of this. Note the word “for” at the beginning of verse 26. The author connects this section of warning with the exhortations of the previous section (draw near, host fast, and consider how to stir up). It seems that the Christian readers were facing the particular temptation of denying identification with “the church” (the Christian community) in the face of potential persecution. The author sternly warns the readers of judgment, reminds them of their joyful commitment in the past, and encourages them with the promise held out for those of faith. We may be tempted to think that we will preserve our souls by laying low (or “shrinking back”) in the face of mistreatment or persecution. However, the author shows that only those who have faith will be preserved.
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Build My Life
Worthy of ev'ry song we could ever sing
Worthy of all the praise we could ever bring
Worthy of ev'ry breath we could ever breathe
We live for You
Jesus the name above ev'ry other name
Jesus the only one who could ever save
Worthy of ev'ry breath we could ever breathe
We live for You
We live for You
Chorus
Holy there is no one like You
There is none beside You
Open up my eyes in wonder and show me who You are
And fill me with Your heart
And lead me in Your love to those around me
I will build my life upon Your love
It is a firm foundation
I will put my trust in You alone
And I will not be shaken
