Read the sermon text: 2 Timothy 4:9-22
Read the sermon summary: Have you ever felt abandoned or in need of support, and struggled to press forward with what mattered most? In 2 Timothy 4:9-22, Paul reveals that he is a needy person. It's clear he had felt the pain of desertion and had the deep need for companionship and support. He asks Timothy to come soon and to bring some practical provisions too (cloak, books, parchments). It seems like even in his last days he wanted to keep pushing forward for the sake of the gospel. We see Paul's ultimate need is the Lord. When everyone else failed Paul, the Lord was by his side. We are reminded in this passage that alone we are insufficient for suffering for the gospel. We are a needy people. We especially need each other. And thankfully, the Lord has given us the assurance of his presence and that he will ultimately deliver us from every trial and welcome us into his kingdom.
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
All I Have Is Christ
Verse 1
I once was lost in darkest night
Yet thought I knew the way
The sin that promised joy and life
Had led me to the grave
I had no hope that You would own
A rebel to Your will
And if You had not loved me first
I would refuse You still
Verse 2
But as I ran my hell-bound race
Indifferent to the cost
You looked upon my helpless state
And led me to the cross
And I beheld God's love displayed
You suffered in my place
You bore the wrath reserved for me
Now all I know is grace
Chorus
Hallelujah all I have is Christ
Hallelujah Jesus is my life
Verse 3
Now Lord I would be Yours alone
And live so all might see
The strength to follow Your commands
Could never come from me
O Father use my ransomed life
In any way You choose
And let my song forever be
My only boast is You
