Read the sermon text: Romans 1:1-7
Read the sermon summary: As we begin studying the book of Romans this Sunday, we will consider Paul’s introduction to the letter. What we notice is that Paul grounds his identity and life’s mission in what he calls “the gospel of God.” Paul briefly outlines this gospel and then describes the purpose for which he received grace and apostleship… “to bring about the obedience of faith among all nations.” We don’t see this phrase again until the very end of the book in chapter 16, verse 26. Thus, Paul brackets the entire letter under this idea. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What contrast do you see concerning the Son of God? In what three ways does Paul describe himself to the Romans? How might we make sense of the phrase, “declared to be the Son of God in power”?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Resurrecting
The head that once was crowned with thorns
Is crowned with glory now
The Savior knelt to wash our feet
Now at his feet we bow
The one who wore our sin and shame
Now robed in majesty
The radiance of perfect love
Now shines for all to see
Chorus
Your name
Your name
Is victory
All praise
Will rise
To Christ our king
The fear that held us now gives way
To him who is our peace
His final breath upon the cross
Is now alive in me
By your spirit I will rise
From the ashes of defeat
The resurrected king
Is resurrecting me
In your name I come alive
To declare your victory
The resurrected king
Is resurrecting me
The tomb where soldiers watched in vain
Was borrowed for three days
His body there would not remain
Our God has robbed the grave
Our God has robbed the grave
