Read the sermon text: Romans 1:8-17

Read the sermon summary: At Christ Church, one of our aims is to “love God’s people.” Upon self-reflection, can you say that you love God’s people? What does it mean to love God’s people? In our text for this Sunday, Paul’s affection for the Roman believers is evident. He thanks God for them, longs for their encouragement, and wants to see them face to face that he might reap some harvest among them. While this section makes up the second half of the introduction to the letter, it also leads to verses 16-17, what virtually all scholars agree is the thesis or main idea of the book of Romans. The means by which Paul expects to gain fruit from the Romans is the preaching of the gospel, for in it the righteousness of God is revealed. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What is the content of Paul’s prayers for the Romans? What do you think it means that Paul is “under obligation” (v. 14)? How is the righteousness of God be revealed in the gospel?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Come Behold The Wondrous Mystery

Come behold the wondrous myst'ry
In the dawning of the King
He the theme of heaven's praises
Robed in frail humanity
In our longing in our darkness
Now the light of life has come
Look to Christ who condescended
Took on flesh to ransom us

Come behold the wondrous myst'ry
He the perfect Son of Man
In His living in His suff'ring
Never trace nor stain of sin
See the true and better Adam
Come to save the hell-bound man
Christ the great and sure fulfillment
Of the law in Him we stand

Come behold the wondrous myst'ry
Christ the Lord upon the tree
In the stead of ruined sinners
Hangs the Lamb in victory
See the price of our redemption
See the Father's plan unfold
Bringing many sons to glory
Grace unmeasured love untold

Come behold the wondrous myst'ry
Slain by death the God of life
But no grave could e'er restrain Him
Praise the Lord He is alive
What a foretaste of deliv'rance
How unwavering our hope
Christ in power resurrected
As we will be when He comes
