Read the sermon text: Romans 2:12-29

Read the sermon summary: In our passage for this Sunday, Paul continues his attack on those Jews who condemn sinners even though they do the same sorts of things. These Jews hold onto the written law and circumcision as those things which justify them before God. Paul, however, points to the necessity of not simply “hearing” the word, but obeying it. Here Paul is talking about a justification which comes on the last day in the judgment (see v. 16). Therefore, we shouldn’t see this as justification by works. Rather, “on that day” works will justify, or vindicate, the genuineness of the faith of those who are righteous by faith. Note also the clear contrast Paul makes between the written code and that which is written on the heart. We see that the written code and marks of the covenant (circumcision) are of no use at all unless the Spirit of God has written his name and law on a person’s heart. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: Do you think verses 14-15 refer to people who have a natural knowledge of right and wrong or of regeneration? Why? In what ways could we apply verses 17-23 to ourselves? According to verse 29, who is included in the term “Jew”? What does Paul mean by this?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Resurrecting

The head that once was crowned with thorns
Is crowned with glory now
The Savior knelt to wash our feet
Now at his feet we bow

The one who wore our sin and shame
Now robed in majesty
The radiance of perfect love
Now shines for all to see

Chorus

Your name
Your name
Is victory
All praise
Will rise
To Christ our king

The fear that held us now gives way
To him who is our peace
His final breath upon the cross
Is now alive in me

By your spirit I will rise
From the ashes of defeat
The resurrected king
Is resurrecting me
In your name I come alive
To declare your victory
The resurrected king
Is resurrecting me

The tomb where soldiers watched in vain
Was borrowed for three days
His body there would not remain
Our God has robbed the grave
Our God has robbed the grave
