Read the sermon text: Romans 3:1-20
Read the sermon summary: In our passage for this Sunday, Paul comes to a conclusion related to his assertion that the wrath of God is revealed against those who sin. In light of our passage from last week (ie. who is a true Jew), Paul contemplates the advantage of Jews. He says that they have some sort of advantage, having received the oracles of God. Yet this advantage doesn’t bring them justification before God. Rather, their unfaithfulness shows that all people, Jew and Gentile, are subject to the righteous wrath of God. Verse 20 is a piercing conclusion: “For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.” In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: How is having the oracles of God considered an advantage? How does human unrighteousness show the righteousness of God? How does Paul’s message in verses 19-20 contrast with the worldview of our society? How does it contradict our own tendencies in thinking?
