Read the sermon text: Romans 5:1-11

Read the sermon summary: We often think of peace as an internal, subjective feeling. It certainly is that and the Bible sometimes speaks about peace in this way. However, we must be careful to distinguish peace in that internal sense from peace in the external, objective sense. In our passage for this Sunday, Paul shows us the result of our justification by faith, namely, peace with God. Remember justification by faith means we have been declared righteous and acceptable to God through our trust in Jesus Christ. The peace we have with God does not refer to an inward feeling, but to an objective reality. God no longer deals with us as enemies, but as those on whom he has lavished his love. Since this is the case, we can view our trials and sufferings differently. No longer do we see them as God’s judgment against us (for we have been saved from his wrath!). In light of our peace with God, we can now see that our sufferings are designed by God to produce in us endurance, strength of character, and a greater hope in God. In preparation for the sermon, consider the following questions: What does it mean to “glory” or “boast” in our sufferings? Why is that so difficult? What is Paul’s argument in verses 9-10? What do you think it means that those who have been justified by faith in Jesus now stand in grace?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Thank You Jesus For The Blood

I was a wretch I remember who I was
I was lost I was blind I was running out of time
Sin separated the breach was far too wide
But from the far side of the chasm
You had me in Your sight

So You made a way across the great divide
Left behind Heaven's throne to build it here inside
There at the cross You paid the debt I owed
Broke my chains freed my soul
For the first time I had hope

Chorus

Thank You Jesus for the blood applied
Thank You Jesus it has washed me white
Thank You Jesus You have saved my life
Brought me from the darkness into glorious light

You took my place laid inside my tomb of sin
You were buried for three days
But then You walked right out again
And now death has no sting and life has no end
For I have been transformed by the blood of the Lamb

There is nothing stronger
Than (Oh) the wonder working power
Of the blood the blood
That calls us sons and daughters
We are ransomed by our Father
Through the blood the blood

Glory to His name
Glory to His Name
There to my heart was the blood applied
Glory to His name
