Read the sermon text: Romans 5:12-21

Read the sermon summary: In our passage for this Sunday, Paul makes a somewhat complex argument regarding the Adam as the representative head of all people and Jesus as the representative head of a new people. The argument centers on the contrast between the one man, Adam, and the one man, Jesus Christ. Because of the trespass of Adam, sin, death, and condemnation spread to all, but by the righteous act of Jesus, he brings grace, life, and justification to all who come to him in faith. Paul’s aim seems to be to show the superiority of the one man, Jesus, and how the gifts he brings powerfully overcome the penalties incurred by Adam. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: Why do you think Paul saw it important to include this argument? What contrasts do you see between Adam and Jesus? Between the results of their work? What do you think it means that those who receive God’s grace will “reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ” (v. 17)? What does it mean that grace will “reign through righteousness leading to eternal life” (v. 21)?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Christ Our Hope In Life And Death

What is our hope in life and death
Christ alone Christ alone
What is our only confidence
That our souls to Him belong
Who holds our days within His hand
What comes apart from His command
And what will keep us to the end
The love of Christ in which we stand

Chorus

O sing hallelujah
Our hope springs eternal
O sing hallelujah
Now and ever we confess
Christ our hope in life and death

What truth can calm the troubled soul
God is good God is good
Where is His grace and goodness known
In our great Redeemer's blood
Who holds our faith when fears arise
Who stands above the stormy trial
Who sends the waves that bring us nigh
Unto the shore the rock of Christ

Unto the grave what will we sing
Christ He lives Christ He lives
And what reward will heaven bring
Everlasting life with Him
There we will rise to meet the Lord
Then sin and death will be destroyed
And we will feast in endless joy
When Christ is ours forevermore
