Read the sermon text: Romans 7:1-6
Read the sermon summary: In our passage for this Sunday, Paul uses marriage as an example of the Christian’s relationship to the law. Just as a woman whose husband dies is free from her bond of marriage with him, so too the Christian has been freed from the law since he has died to the law. Paul emphasizes the new reality for the Christian in three ways: 1) he belongs to another—the resurrected Christ, 2) he lives with the purpose to bear fruit for God, and 3) he serves in the new way of the Spirit. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What does it mean to bear fruit for God? What is the difference between serving in the new way of the Spirit and the old way of the letter?
