Read the sermon text: Luke 2:1-21
Read the sermon summary: How will you celebrate Christmas? Many will spend time with family and friends eating, celebrating, singing, and opening presents. Perhaps Christmas calls to mind grand choirs singing melodious Christmas carols. In our passage for this Sunday, we will read one of the first Christmas carols, sung by a choir of thousands of angels while the glory of the Lord shown around them. It must have been a grand site the shepherds saw. Yet what is striking about this account in Luke 2 is the contrast between glory and humility. We are reminded of the humble circumstances in which the Savior appeared. As we gather this Sunday to celebrate Christmas, consider the following questions: What humble circumstances do you observe in the text? Why do you think Luke goes to such pains to show us these humble circumstances? What does this teach us about the Savior?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
O Come All Ye Faithful (Adeste Fideles)
O come all ye faithful
Joyful and triumphant
O come ye O come ye to Bethlehem
Come and behold Him
Born the King of angels
Chorus
O come let us adore Him
O come let us adore Him
O come let us adore Him
Christ the Lord
Sing choirs of angels
Sing in exultation
O sing all ye bright
Hosts of heav'n above
Glory to God all
Glory in the highest
Yea Lord we greet Thee
Born this happy morning
Jesus to Thee be all glory giv'n
Word of the Father
Now in flesh appearing
