Read the sermon text: Hebrews 1:5-2:4
Read the sermon summary: There is a crisis of authority in our world today. Who will you believe? Why? Who fact-checks the fact-checkers? In our passage for this Sunday, the author of Hebrews compares the authority of angels with that of the Son, Jesus Christ. Using the Old Testament scriptures, he shows that the Son is infinitely greater than the angels. The Son is the Creator, Sustainer, King, and God Almighty. At the beginning of chapter 2, the author makes an application: We must be all the more careful about how we listen to God speaking by the Son. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: Why does the author think this application is necessary? What is the “word” we have heard and must listen to?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Holy Holy Holy (Nicaea)
Holy holy holy
Lord God Almighty
Early in the morning
Our song shall rise to Thee
Holy holy holy
Merciful and mighty
God in three persons
Blessed Trinity
Holy holy holy
All the saints adore Thee
Casting down their golden crowns
Around the glassy sea
Cherubim and seraphim
Falling down before Thee
Which wert and art
And evermore shalt be
Holy holy holy
Though the darkness hide Thee
Though the eye of sinful man
Thy glory may not see
Only Thou art holy
There is none beside Thee
Perfect in power
In love and purity
Holy holy holy
Lord God Almighty
All Thy works shall praise Thy name
In earth and sky and sea
Holy holy holy
Merciful and mighty
God in three persons
Blessed Trinity
