Read the sermon text: Hebrews 7:1-28

Read the sermon summary: Before the advent of smart phones you had to use a physical map or get directions to your destination beforehand. Maybe some of you remember, like I do, going on MapQuest and printing out your directions before leaving for a trip. It’s not enough to know your destination. You have to also know the way to get there. As we consider the Scripture we see that God’s plan all along included a specific destination: he wanted his people to be with him. In our passage for this Sunday, the author of Hebrews returns to his main subject: the priesthood of Jesus. He shows us that Jesus’s priesthood is of an entirely different order than that of the Levites in the Old Testament. Jesus’s priesthood is qualitatively different in the tenure of his position, the sacrifices required, and his appointment by God. Because of this, Jesus gives us a better hope than the Old Testament law or priests could ever give. Though they were a reminder of our need of a mediator and forgiveness, they never actually gave us what we need. We see that the way to our destination, being in the presence of God, is obtained only through Jesus Christ as our Great High Priest.

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Man Of Sorrows

Man of sorrows Lamb of God

By His own betrayed

The sin of man and wrath of God

Has been on Jesus laid

Silent as He stood accused

Beaten mocked and scorned

Bowing to the Father's will

He took a crown of thorns

Chorus

Oh that rugged cross my salvation

Where Your love poured out over me

Now my soul cries out hallelujah

Praise and honour unto Thee

Sent of heaven God's own Son

To purchase and redeem

And reconcile the very ones

Who nailed Him to that tree

Now my debt is paid

It is paid in full

By the precious blood

That my Jesus spilled

Now the curse of sin

Has no hold on me

Whom the Son sets free

Oh is free indeed

See the stone is rolled away

Behold the empty tomb

Hallelujah God be praised

He's risen from the grave
