Read the sermon text: Romans 12:13

Read the sermon summary: In our passage for this Sunday, we encounter two simple commands: “Contribute to the needs of the saints. Seek to show hospitality.” However, as is the case in many commands in Scripture, we see that these commands aren’t as facile as they seem. These commands get the root of what we prize. Treasure money? Then you’ll be unlikely to contribute to the needs of the saints. Overly protective of your own privacy and things in your home? These will lead you to be less than hospitable to those in need. What we will discover is that since God has generously given us everything we need in this life and the life to come, we can now be generous to others. As the song tells us, “Freely, freely, you have received. Freely, freely give.” In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What is the corporate nature of the first command? What is the biblical meaning of showing hospitality? How can we as a church be characterized as a generous and hospitable community?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Thank You Jesus For The Blood

I was a wretch I remember who I was
I was lost I was blind I was running out of time
Sin separated the breach was far too wide
But from the far side of the chasm
You had me in Your sight

So You made a way across the great divide
Left behind Heaven's throne to build it here inside
There at the cross You paid the debt I owed
Broke my chains freed my soul
For the first time I had hope

Chorus

Thank You Jesus for the blood applied
Thank You Jesus it has washed me white
Thank You Jesus You have saved my life
Brought me from the darkness into glorious light

You took my place laid inside my tomb of sin
You were buried for three days
But then You walked right out again
And now death has no sting and life has no end
For I have been transformed by the blood of the Lamb

There is nothing stronger
Than (Oh) the wonder working power
Of the blood the blood
That calls us sons and daughters
We are ransomed by our Father
Through the blood the blood
