Read the sermon text: Romans 12:14, 17-21
Read the sermon summary: In Matthew 5:43–44, Jesus taught us, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. Have we taken this command seriously? And, by the way, when Jesus said, “Pray for those who persecute you,” he didn’t mean with imprecatory prayers. Paul echoes this teaching of Jesus in Romans 12. Contrary to our fleshly nature, we are commanded to do good, bless, and pray for our enemies. We will see, however, that living in such a way reflects the gospel and the activity of God in this present age, for he causes the sun to shine on both the good and the evil. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: Who is your enemy? What would it mean for you to bless them and to love them? What do you think is the meaning of verse 20, that “you will heap burning coals on his head”?
