Read the sermon text: Romans 12:15
Read the sermon summary: In the Bible, the word “koinonia” is sometimes translated as fellowship or participation. Since Jesus Christ has made us one family, one body, there is a sense in which we share all things in common. We have the same Lord, Father, and Spirit. We participate in one another’s lives and contribute to each other’s needs. In our passage for this Sunday, we see that our “koinonia” even extends to our feelings and the expressions of those feelings. Our relationships should be so intimate that we actually participate in one another’s joys and sorrows. Far from simply offering sympathy for one another, there ought to be genuine empathy in both rejoicing and weeping. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: How is sharing the feelings of others connected to our unity in Christ? What’s the difference between sympathy and empathy? Is empathy something we can grow in?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Man of Sorrows
Man of sorrows Lamb of God
By His own betrayed
The sin of man and wrath of God
Has been on Jesus laid
Silent as He stood accused
Beaten mocked and scorned
Bowing to the Father's will
He took a crown of thorns
Chorus
Oh that rugged cross my salvation
Where Your love poured out over me
Now my soul cries out hallelujah
Praise and honour unto Thee
Sent of heaven God's own Son
To purchase and redeem
And reconcile the very ones
Who nailed Him to that tree
Now my debt is paid
It is paid in full
By the precious blood
That my Jesus spilled
Now the curse of sin
Has no hold on me
Whom the Son sets free
Oh is free indeed
See the stone is rolled away
Behold the empty tomb
Hallelujah God be praised
He's risen from the grave
