Read the sermon text: Romans 13:1-7
Read the sermon summary: “Don’t Tread on Me.” So read the words under a coiled snake on the yellow Gadsden flag flown during the American Revolution. How should we Christians think about that? How should we think about ourselves in relation to the American government? As we have seen in Romans 12, Paul shows how the gospel of grace transforms those who believe. As we turn to chapter 13, Paul continues to describe what the Christian life should look like in this present world. We will see that Paul’s command to be subject to the governing authorities is grounded in his sovereign institution of them. Authorities, Paul says, are servants of God for our good. But what if governments don’t work for our good? Should we ever resist governmental authorities? While we won’t get to every question we might have about this topic, this Sunday we will consider what it means for us, who are citizens of the Kingdom of God, to live in a society ruled by humans.
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Behold Our God
Who has held the oceans in His hands
Who has numbered every grain of sand
Kings and nations tremble at His voice
All creation rises to rejoice
Chorus
Behold our God seated on His throne
Come let us adore Him
Behold our King nothing can compare
Come let us adore Him
Who has given counsel to the Lord
Who can question any of His words
Who can teach the One who knows all things
Who can fathom all His wondrous deeds
Who has felt the nails upon His hands
Bearing all the guilt of sinful man
God eternal humbled to the grave
Jesus Savior risen now to reign
You will reign forever
(Let Your glory fill the earth)
You will reign forever
(Let Your glory fill)
