Read the sermon text: Romans 13:8-14
Read the sermon summary: What if you somehow knew the Lord Jesus Christ was returning in one week? Would you change anything about your pursuits and daily activities? Would you cast off some of your current activities as unimportant? In our passage for this Sunday, Paul calls us to recognize the time. It appears that he is referring to the eschatological event of the return of Jesus Christ. When Jesus entered the world as a man, the entire timeline of this present age changed. The Kingdom of God is here, yet we await its final fulfillment and the return of Christ. In light of this imminent event, Paul says we should cast off the works of darkness and put on Christ. The shortness of the time left in this present age should motivate us to pursue righteousness and love. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: How does the section on love (v. 8-10) connect with the section on knowing the time (v. 11-14)? What images does Paul use in verses 11-14 to describe how Christians ought to behave? What does it mean that “salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed”?
