Read the sermon text: Romans 9:14-29

Read the sermon summary: For hundreds of years, Christians have debated the questions of predestination, election, divine sovereignty, and human freedom. While we won’t solve all of those challenges this Sunday, we will consider a difficult truth summarized in verse 18 of our passage: “So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.” When Paul writes these words, he is answering a potential charge against God’s justness related to God’s purpose of election (v. 11-13). Interestingly, Paul answers this charge by pointing his readers to the absolute freedom of God, as God, to do as he wills. In this passage, we are reminded of the absolute sovereignty of God and of his amazing grace in making those who were not his people, his beloved.

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Only A Holy God

Who else commands all the hosts of heaven
Who else could make every king bow down
Who else can whisper and darkness trembles
Only a Holy God

What other beauty demands such praises
What other splendour outshines the sun
What other majesty rules with justice
Only a Holy God

Chorus

Come and behold Him
The One and the Only
Cry out sing holy
Forever a Holy God
Come and worship the Holy God

What other glory consumes like fire
What other power can raise the dead
What other name remains undefeated
Only a Holy God

Who else could rescue me from my failing
Who else would offer His only Son
Who else invites me to call Him Father
Only a Holy God
Only my Holy God
