Read the sermon text: Romans 9:30-10:13
Read the sermon summary: In our passage for this Sunday, Paul draws some conclusions from the previous section. He does so by pointing to the contrast between the righteous of faith and the righteousness of works. Paul argues that while Israel zealously pursued righteousness they failed to reach it. On the other hand, Gentiles weren’t even looking for righteousness and have attained it. Interestingly, he argues in favor of the righteousness of faith from the book of Deuteronomy. Almost paradoxically to the previous chapter, Paul proclaims that “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved,” once again pointing his readers to the freedom of God to show mercy. He maintains these two truths without any hesitation: “God shows mercy on whomever he will” and “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Rock Of Ages (Toplady)
Rock of Ages cleft for me
Let me hide myself in thee
Let the water and the blood
From thy wounded side which flowed
Be of sin the double cure
Save from wrath and make me pure
Not the labors of my hands
Can fulfill thy law's demands
Could my zeal no respite know
Could my tears forever flow
All for sin could not atone
Thou must save and thou alone
Nothing in my hand I bring
Simply to the cross I cling
Naked come to thee for dress
Helpless look to thee for grace
Foul I to the fountain fly
Wash me Savior or I die
While I draw this fleeting breath
When mine eyes shall close in death
When I soar to worlds unknown
See thee on thy judgment throne
Rock of Ages cleft for me
Let me hide myself in thee
