Read the sermon text: Luke 1:46-55
Read the sermon summary: This week, as we begin a series of expectation leading up to Christmas, we will consider the Magnificat of Mary. The term “Magnificat” derives from Latin, reflecting the word, “Magnifies.” In response to hearing the news that she would give birth to a son who would have the throne of his father David, Mary praises the Lord for fulfilling his promises to his people. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: How is the poem structured? What contrasts do you see within the text? What do you think is the author’s intention with this text in light of the preceding announcement stories?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Joy To The World (Antioch)
Joy to the world the Lord is come
Let earth receive her King
Let ev'ry heart prepare Him room
And heav'n and nature sing
And heav'n and nature sing
And heav'n and heav'n and nature sing
Joy to the earth the Savior reigns
Let men their songs employ
While fields and floods
Rocks hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat repeat the sounding joy
No more let sins and sorrows grow
Nor thorns infest the ground
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found
Far as the curse is found
Far as far as the curse is found
He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love
And wonders of His love
And wonders wonders of His love
