Read the sermon text: Hebrews 8:1-13

Read the sermon summary: This Sunday we will return to our study through the book of Hebrews. In chapter 8, the author reiterates what he has said about Jesus as our Great High Priest. The key verse in our passage is verse 6, where the author tells us that Jesus has a better ministry with a better covenant based on better promises. Further, he extensively quotes Jeremiah 31 to show that the new covenant that Jesus mediates makes the old covenant obsolete. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: How does the author contrast Jesus’s priesthood with the priesthood of the old covenant? Where does the author say that Jesus performs his priestly ministry? How is the old covenant contrasted with the new covenant described in the Jeremiah 31 passage?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Promises

God of Abraham You're the God of covenant

Of faithful promises

Time and time again You have proven

You do just what You say

Though the storms may come

And the winds may blow

I'll remain steadfast

And let my heart learn when You speak a word

It will come to pass

Chorus

Great is Your faithfulness to me

Great is Your faithfulness to me

From the rising sun to the setting same

I will praise Your name

Great is Your faithfulness to me

God from age to age

Though the earth may pass away

Your word remains the same yeah

Your history can prove

There's nothing You can't do

You're faithful and true

I put my faith in Jesus

My anchor to the ground

My hope and firm foundation

He'll never let me down
