Read the sermon text: Exodus 1:1-3:15
Read the sermon summary: God promised Abraham that all the nations would be blessed through his offspring. But when we arrive at Exodus 1, the people of Israel are enslaved to the Egyptians. Last week, as pastor Tracy preached through the book of Genesis, he gave us tools and a framework for reading and interpreting the Old Testament, especially the Pentateuch. We enter into our study of Exodus looking for the offspring of Abraham, the Lion-King and Lawgiver through whom God will fulfill his purposes and deliver his people. In our passage for this Sunday, we see God raising up another deliverer who will be a type of the one to come. We might be tempted to scour the text for moral principles we can glean from this passage. However, we should first seek to understand the intention of the author. What does he want us, the readers, to understand? In this passage, it appears the author wants us to see the uniqueness of Moses as God prepares him and calls him to be the deliverer of his people. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: In what ways does the author portray Moses as special? What verbs are used to describe God’s actions at the end of chapter two? What do you think is the significance of God’s name?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Ancient Of Days
Though the nations rage
Kingdoms rise and fall
There is still one King
Reigning over all
So I will not fear
For this truth remains
That my God is the Ancient of Days
Chorus
None above Him none before Him
All of time in His hands
For His throne it shall remain and ever stand
All the power all the glory
I will trust in His name
For my God is the Ancient of days
Though the dread of night
Overwhelms my soul
He is here with me
I am not alone
O His love is sure
And He knows my name
For my God is the Ancient of Days
Though I may not see
What the future brings
I will watch and wait
For the Saviour king
Then my joy complete
Standing face to face
In the presence of the Ancient of Days
