Read the sermon text: Exodus 4:1-31

Read the sermon summary: In this passage, Moses is set forth as God’s representative. He “shall be as God” to Aaron. He will declare God’s word to his people and God promises to be “with [his] mouth.” In addition, Moses will perform the signs and wonders of God, possessing the “staff of God.” And he will lead God’s people into the presence and favor of God to worship him on the “mountain of God.” The proper response of the people would be faith and obedience (4:1). However, the initial faith of Israel (4:31) proves fickle and the promise of meeting God on his mountain (3:12 and 15:17) remains unfulfilled. We see that in order for the promise of dwelling with God on his mountain to be fulfilled, the people will need a more certain faith and obedience. And for this to happen, one greater than Moses must come.
